Rocky Mountain Repertory Theatre (RMRT) announced this week that Michael Querio has accepted a newly created position of Executive Artistic Director for the theatre. The position is the combination of two existing positions and incorporates the artistic and business responsibilities into one position.

“I started coming to Grand Lake to work at Rocky Mountain Rep in 1995, and it has always been a part-time job – always part of my professional life,” said Querio.

“Now to think that my job at RMRT will be my full-time job is so wonderful to me.”

Querio’s wealth of knowledge comes from his history in Chicago and throughout the Midwest as an accomplished conductor, teacher, and musical arranger. Querio has helped produce over 50 productions on the RMRT stage.

Even after more than two decades of summer theatre, Querio is still excited to start the new season.

“It’s stimulating and exciting,” he said.

And now in this new position he will be charged with developing programs in the off-season and growing the Christmas program in addition to maintaining the existing programs.

“We hope to continue to partner with the Town of Grand Lake and Grand County to keep the theatre vital and thriving.”

In its sixth season with a new theatre in Grand Lake, the entire process of raising money and constructing the theatre for RMRT is a professional highlight for Querio.

“The process of raising the money and designing the theater was thrilling,” he said.

“Compared to the space where we use to perform, we are in a state-of-the-art facility. It is fantastic for performers, the audience and technicians.”

The season unofficially begins for the RMRT in May. They begin to open up cabins where the actors and musicians will live for the summer and then the actors start arriving. Shortly after that the choreographers arrive. Then the following week the musicians arrive.

From May to July 4 everyone works a 12-13 hour day without a day off, said Querio.

“Our actors are used to this type of schedule, no one is a beginner.”

With a season of exciting shows and the passion of Querio in his new role, this season is slated to be top notch; as always.

The 2016 season begins on June 17 with Disney’s The Little Mermaid followed by Rock of Ages on June 24 and Titanic: The Musical on July 8. The Fall show is Million Dollar Quartet, which opens on September 2.

In 2017, RMRT will celebrate their 50th anniversary.
