Residents and visitors of Grand County can enjoy the sights, sounds and tastes of the 96th Middle Park Fair and Rodeo starting on Friday, Aug. 3, all the way until Sunday, Aug. 12 at the Middle Park Fairgrounds in Kremmling. This year’s Fair and Rodeo promise to be full of all the fun events and competitions from last year.Saturday, Aug. 4, features the 4-H dog show, followed by the open horse show on Sunday. Tuesday will feature the 4-H horse show, and livestock shows will occur throughout the week.Big excitement unfolds on Thursday, Aug. 9, with the Junior Rodeo, with events for participants between the ages of five and 18.”Last year that brought in 147 contestants,” said Matt Friesen, president of the Middle Park Fair & Rodeo Board. “It’s very popular. They’ve got a little bit for every age group.”The same number of contestants is expected to return this year to compete in events such as “goat tail undecorating” for the youngest, and barrels, poles, and goat tail tying for intermediate ages. Older contestants will participate in events including team roping, steer riding, barrels, poles and junior bull riding. Friday, Aug. 10, features the crunching carnage of the Demolition Derby. In addition to bone-jarring, metal-screeching excitement, the Denver Broncos cheerleaders will be there to provide even more entertainment.Crowds can also look forward to live music performances by The McRae, a Colorado country/rock band that has won awards for its performances at the 2010 and 2011 Colorado State Fairs. A family affair, The McRae plays both original songs and covers of country favorites such as Kenny Chesney, Brad Paisley, Lady Antebellum, and more.To top it off, the entire event will announced by one of the skillful KBPI 106.7 radio DJs from Denver. On Saturday, Aug. 11, look forward to the Junior Livestock Sale, starting at 7 p.m. Beef, sheep, goats, pigs and poultry will be on sale. All proceeds from the auction go to the kids, who can use the money for college funds, or to pay their expenses for raising the animal.”One of the neat aspects of the Junior Livestock Auction is that folks have the opportunity to donate back their purchase,” said Friesen.Buyers can purchase an animal and then donate it back to a local nonprofit, for example the Middle Park 4-H Scholarship Fund, the Pregnancy Resource Center, Mountain Family Center, and West Grand Education Foundation, among others. Donations at the auction last year yielded $8,690 in profits. “It’s a great way to give secondary support for those places,” Friesen said. Sunday, Aug. 12, caps the end of the fair by crowning the rodeo royalty at the CPRA rodeo performance.
