What is the role of the County Veterans Service Officer?

A county Veterans Service Officer (VSO) is a professional individual who advocates for veterans benefits. They should never take an action which they believe to have a negative impact on the veteran or family of the veteran. The VSO is also responsible for being proficient in the areas of customer service, technical knowledge of regulation and law as it pertains to Veteran Affairs (VA) matters, and proper disposition of claims and appeals. They too should be empathic, understanding and helpful.

Misconduct by VSO's is commonly grouped into two sections: unprofessional and illegal. Issues which may constitute unprofessional conduct include: not filing a claim in a timely manner, unprofessional conversation with a client, and willfully submitting fraudulent evidence or documentation. Rarely can a VSO knowingly or willingly execute an illegal action

It is very important that Veterans seeking a professional a VSO take several factors into consideration. First, verify that the VSO is accredited by a veterans service organization. By way of example, Colorado Division of Veterans Affairs, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, etc. Second, if a VSO attempts to charge you money for services rendered, either covertly or overtly, they should be reported to the Department of Veterans Affairs. Third, you should make an appointment with your county VSO to explain your case and get a feel for how well they do their job. The VSO is your lifeline to VA benefits, and you must ensure that you are being provided every benefit that you deserve. One of the many duties of the Grand County Veterans Service Officer is to assure professional wholesome and confidential service to the veterans and their families who allow the VSO to represent their interests to the VA.
