Serious wreck ends with lucky break

A serious traffic accident on US Highway 40 on Tuesday August 2 ended with one male subject being transported for advanced medical treatment on a Flight for Life helicopter.

The wreck snarled traffic along US 40 for quite some time Tuesday afternoon as county and state authorities closed down the highway to allow the Flight for Life helicopter to land.

The accident occurred as a male dump truck driver was driving west on US 40 in the Red Dirt Hill area as he was heading towards Granby. As the driver of the dump truck neared the bottom of Red Dirt Hill he came upon a vehicle stopped in the road preparing to make a turn. With a possibly catastrophic crash nearing the driver of the dump truck diverted his behemoth rig onto the right shoulder of the highway.

The driver managed to avoid the vehicle in front of him while crashing into the ditch on the side of the highway. As the wreck was occurring the fully loaded dump truck, carrying a full load of dirt, rolled and ejected the driver. The dump truck rolled directly onto the driver pinning him between the truck and the earth.

That was when luck struck. What normally would have resulted in death ended up resulting in relatively minor injuries for the truck driver. As the dump truck rolled onto the driver the man was pressed down into the mud beneath him. The soft nature of the mud allowed his body to compress the mud and prevented the man from being crushed to death.

The driver was taken to St. Anthony's Central. The Colorado State Patrol is handling the formal accident investigation.
