Children playing with lighter start grass fire in Granby
April 18, 2012
Two youngsters ages 9 and 11 started a grass fire near in a field east of the Granby Jones neighborhood in Granby on Tuesday evening.
The youngsters, who were among a small group of children gathered in the field around 6:30 p.m., were playing with a lighter that started a fire that grew to two to three spot fires about 8 feet by 10 feet each in the dead grass before Granby Fire put it out.
The youngsters were not cited for the fire as of Wednesday morning, according to Granby Police Chief Bill Housley. “At this point, there is parental disciplinary action,” Housley said. “We’ll look at the totality of the thing and see if there’s any need for further action.”
None of the youngsters were injured in the stunt, and no structures were threatened by the fire, according to Housley.
