the Associated Press

DENVER – Colorado’s unemployment rate fell to 7 percent in September and the state’s top labor official predicts the trend will continue.

The jobless rate in August was 7.3 percent. State labor chief Don Mares said Wednesday he expects the unemployment rate to keep dropping.

Colorado’s unemployment rate was 7.8 percent in July.

But the number of jobless is still higher than a year ago. The unemployment rate was 5 percent in September 2008.

State figures show that a total of 187,400 Coloradans were looking for work in September, down 9,800 from August.

The state reports that about 2.5 million Coloradans had jobs in September, compared to 2.6 million the same time a year ago.

Nationally, the jobless rate rose to 9.8 percent in September, a 26-year high.
