February 14, 2017
The East Grand School District held a spelling bee for elementary and junior high students last week.
The District Spelling Bee included students between fourth and eighth-grade and was held in the District offices on Thursday Feb. 9. The winner of the District Spelling Bee was seventh-grader Chance Hein who clinched the top spot after 13 rounds with the word "geothermal".
The District Bee initially began as a series of classroom spelling bees. The winners of the classroom bees moved on to the second round of the contest, school wide spelling bees. The top three finishers from each school then moved on to compete in the District Bee.
Granby Elementary, Fraser Valley Elementary, and the East Grand Middle School all sent contingents to compete in the Bee.
The top three students from Granby Elementary who competed in the District Bee were: Lexi Robinson, Jackson Salyards and Haize Garcia. The top three students from Fraser Valley Elementary who competed in the District Bee were: Nathan Chua, Alex Hanna and Sierra Manyak. The top three students from East Grand Middle School who competed in the District Bee were: Osiel Sandoval, Chance Hein and Steffi O'Flaherty.
According to Granby Elementary Fifth Grade Teacher Brandon Young the District Bee was well attended by, "friends and family, along with teachers and the Superintendent." Young added the Bee was streamed live to classrooms in the District to allow students to watch the contest.
