Singing comes naturally to young Juliet Shams of Granby.

The 16-year-old Middle Park High School student began her musical career around age 9, performing in school plays and other small theater productions. That was when one of Juliet’s music teachers noticed her talent. The young lady began honing her talents, singing at various church and school functions before moving up to Grand County.

“Music is my passion,” said Juliet. “It is so important to me in every aspect of my life. I enjoy sharing my music and my interpretations of songs with the crowd. Music will always be my passion.”

After moving to the Colorado high country from Arizona, Juliet began singing in local establishments such as Pancho and Lefty’s and the Blue Water Bakery in Grand Lake. She also worked on her craft while attending her family church, Trinity Presbyterian Church in the Pines.

Juliet performs at weddings, school sporting events, charity functions veterans events and various local radio performances. All her singing is done on a volunteer basis. She has performed the National Anthem at the Denver Coliseum for the State Volleyball Finals and has performed during the Granby 4th of July Parade.

“Singing for the veterans is my favorite thing. There is not much that I can give back for what they have done for our country. But singing a little song is something I can do and it is my favorite thing.”

She also says she enjoys singing at weddings very much. “It is a very happy time and a happy gathering of people. It’s romantic.”

The teenage vocalist enjoys singing everything from jazz to bluegrass, from opera to country and all points in between. “I couldn’t pick a favorite genre. I will sing pretty much everything besides metal,” said Juliet with a chuckle.

She is still uncertain about her end goals regarding her singing career. “I would love to be a successful musician, or a music teacher,” said Juliet. “I just love sharing music with anyone.”

You can catch Juliet performing live at the Grand Lake Community House on Friday, Dec. 19, when The Grand Arts Council presents “A Rocky Mountain Christmas with Juliet.” The evening’s events start at 6:30 p.m. with a meet and greet cocktail hour. Juliet’s performance will begin at 7 p.m.

She will perform Christmas classics such as “I’ll be home for Christmas” and O’ Holly Night.

It will be a family affair Friday evening as Juliet’s brothers will be performing as elves and Santa for the night while her sisters cook the food for the event.

“We really think this time of year is when you give back,” said Jill Buckingham, Juliet’s mom Jill Buckingham. “It is a time to be with your family. What better way to do that than with music and food.”

Tickets to “A Rocky Mountain Christmas with Juliet” cost $25 for adults and $10 for children. Semi-formal attire is suggested but not required. For tickets call (970) 887-8903 or 970-531-0110.
