Experts discuss water future at State of River meeting
May 30, 2013
Do not let April's powder skiing and late-season snow shoveling deceive you. Western Colorado is still in the grip of a drought and the reservoirs in Grand County (like Granby and Wolford Mountain) still have big holes to fill after last year's near-record dry year.
Storing and moving water are two of the main solutions to enhance the environmental health of rivers and streams and improve water quality and quantity for municipal and other uses. A panel of key water leaders that negotiate these and other solutions will discuss and respond to questions about the progress of the provisions of the historic Colorado River Cooperative Agreement and several other major collaborative and cooperative measures concerning our precious water resources.
• County Commissioner and Colorado River District Board President James Newberry
• Grand County Manager Lurline Underbrink Curran
• Colorado River District General Manager Eric Kuhn
• Denver Water Director of Planning Dave Little
• Northern Water General Manager Eric Wilkinson
Eric Kuhn will also discuss the Western Colorado perspective of the new Colorado River Basin Water Supply and Demand Study that predicts Colorado and beyond water shortages in the millions of acre-feet for the in the coming decades.
Eric Wilkinson will also provide an update on the Windy Gap Firming Project and the fire pre-treatment and pre-planning efforts in Grand County.
The public can also learn more about the long-term drought, snowpack and critical reservoir operations from Don Meyer, Colorado River District and Andrew Gilmore, US Bureau of Reclamation.
This annual Grand County State of the River meeting is set for 6:30pm on Wednesday, May 22 at the Inn at Silver Creek, 62927 US Highway 40, near Granby. The event is sponsored by the Colorado River District and the Grand County Water Information Network. Refreshments will be available starting at 6 p.m.
