Fraser man dies during backcountry ski trip

David Moran, 43, of Fraser died Monday afternoon during a backcountry hut trip on the Strawberry Trail, according to Grand County authorities.He was part of a group of 16 who were skiing or snowshoeing into a hut on private land along the trail, said Sheriff Rod Johnson.I think he died there on the scene, Johnson said.Others in his group, which had become spread out along the trail, found him face down and not breathing, he said.Authorities were alerted about the incident by group members with cell phones, according to the incident report. Some callers reported that CPR was administered to Moran for some time, but to no avail.Grand County Coroner Brenda Bock said the cause of death is still being investigated, but it looks like natural causes.Grand County Search & Rescue brought Moran back to the road using a snowmobile pulling a sled, Johnson said.The Strawberry Trail heads north toward the Caribou Trail and Strawberry Creek from the road into Meadow Creek Reservoir.
