Friday night preps: Middle Park wins both rivalry games against West Grand

In a meeting of cross-county rivals on Friday night in Granby, Middle Park came out on the winning end of both the girls and boys basketball games against West Grand.
In the girls’ game Middle Park went out to an early lead, holding a 7-0 advantage over the Lady Mustangs at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Panthers built the lead to 15-5 at halftime and 29-10 at the end of the third quarter. West Grand was able to get their offense on track in the fourth quarter, but it was not enough to eat into Middle Park’s lead. In the end Middle Park won 46-23.
The boys’ game proved to be a much closer contest. West Grand held a 9-8 lead after the first quarter. The Panthers made a run in the second quarter and took a 23-16 advantage into the locker room at halftime. Middle Park held a two-point lead after the third quarter, 39-37. The teams traded to the lead several times during the fourth quarter before the Panthers took a 49-47 lead as time was winding down. West Grand’s Hunter Gasvoda was fouled as time expired, but was only able to convert one of two free throw attempts to give Middle Park a 49-48 win.
West Grand and Middle Park will be back in action on Saturday with games against Platte Canyon in Granby. The West Grand girls will tipoff at 10 a.m., followed by the West Grand boys against Platte Canyon at 11:30 a.m. The Middle Park girls will take on Platte Canyon at at 1:30 p.m., followed by the boys game at 3 p.m.
