From the Vault: Middle Park Times gets new publisher, rock slide closes Byers
May 8, 2014
Middle Park Times, May 5, 1966 — The Middle Park Times, one of the oldest continuously operating newspapers in Colorado, was sold from Paul Way to Robert F. Sweeney in Craig. Way had owned and operated the newspaper for 17 years. The new publishers also owned a small daily newspaper in Craig and a weekly in Hayden and "just like to print newspapers," according to the front-page story. Noticeable changes were apparent throughout the paper after the new publishers took over, including larger headlines, more photographs, a bigger focus on high school sports and a more visually oriented front page. The new publishers also had a habit of using the word "thru" instead of "through."
A giant rock slide "rained down upon U.S. 40," blocking Byers Canyon. An effort was made to blast a rock point handing over the roadway, but according to the story, "such blasting had no effect upon the point because the explosion escaped thru (sic) a fissure that runs back up the mountainside."
