Granby board approves license for new liquor store near City Market
January 12, 2010
In a matter of months, Granby proper will be home to three liquor stores if Andrew Buettner’s intentions unfold according to plan.
He was among the happy contingent leaving the Granby Town Board meeting room Tuesday night after the board, sitting as the Granby Liquor Licensing Authority, approved a license for Granby Marketplace Liquors LLC.
That is the 3,500-square-foot liquor store Buettner, as owner and manager, intends to open next to McDonald’s near City Market sometime in March or April.
About 20 spectators watched as trustees discussed their views on the contentious proposal. The discussion was punctuated by awkward silences as the council members took up the issue after continuing the hearing from a packed-house meeting on Dec. 9 last year.
“It’s been difficult not being able to talk to anyone … and trying to determine what’s best for the community,” said Trustee Ken Coatney, who eventually made the lengthy motion to approve the license.
Other trustees echoed that sentiment, regardless of how they voted. Per the town attorney’s instructions, they were forbidden from discussing the issue because the hearing constituted a quasi-judicial proceeding during which ex parte communications are not permitted.

Members of a group of downtown businesses that formed a coalition to oppose the liquor store watched silently as the votes were counted. Mayor Jynnifer Pierro cast the deciding vote in favor of the license after trustees voted 3-3.
Patrick Brower, who represented the coalition of downtown businesses, said the group would decline comment on the outcome.
“It’s over,” he said.
Buettner declined comment as well, though he was smiling freely after the hearing.
“I’ll say one thing,” said his attorney, Adam Stapen, after the hearing.
“I applaud them (trustees) for making a difficult but correct decision.”
