Granby Center 4 Excellence offers summer school geography program

The Center 4 Excellences Summer’sKool program will feature fun and challenging ways to learn about U.S. geography, Colorado geography and, for those who are up to the challenge, Grand County geography.Students will explore what makes where we live so unique and what resources are available. There will be outdoor education, in-class mentoring, and some pretty cool movies. Great visitors are scheduled, too.Gifted & Talented, Advanced, ADD/ADHD students are all encouraged to attend.The Center 4 Excellence has expanded programming to include third to seventh grades as well as eighth through 12th grade instruction.Two sessions are scheduled this summer. Session 1 begins each Monday June 22 through July 13. Session 2 begins each Monday July 27 through Aug. 17. The morning class runs 9-11:30 a.m. Students will have a 30 minute lunch. The afternoon class will run 1-3:30 p.m. Class sizes will be limited to 16 students per morning or afternoon session. Instructors for each group will be trained to provide grade-appropriate instruction and will use Love & Logic for class discipline and problem solving. Each course is designed so that each student, regardless of grade, will meet most of the East Grand School District minimum content requirements for freshmen geography and junior-senior Colorado State History (see course description). The class is designed to provide a minimum of 16 hours instruction along with the appropriate amount of project work to be done in groups or at home.There will be an exploration trip to discover a point of interest in each direction of Grand County (north, south, east, west). During this day trip, students who have achieved Level 3 Mastery (see course description) will select a point of interest, work with a group of peers, map out directions to this point, discuss the key points of geography, and prepare a presentation.Each student is required to have parental permission along with insurance coverage similar to what your child holds in order to attend public school. If you do not have insurance, we may be able to assist. Lunch is available (at a small cost) for morning class only.The cost of Summer’sKool is $25 instruction/2.5 hours per week, $5 lunch/week (optional), $5 transportation/week (limited, optional).Full and partial scholarships are available in limited quantity on a first-come, first-serve basis.
