Grand County gets $60,000 grant for emrgency weather broadcasts

U.S. Sen. Mark Udall, D-Colo., recently congratulated Grand County on its receipt of a $60,325 grant to help the county transmit emergency weather broadcasts throughout the region.

“This competitive grant will help Grand County improve its system to warn residents of developing emergencies.  Coming off of one of the most destructive wildfire seasons to date and with winter on our doorsteps, it is increasingly important to ensure that Coloradans receive potentially life-saving information as soon as possible,” Udall said. “This competitive grant will help the county set up the infrastructure to broadcast emergency weather warnings throughout the region.”

The competitive grant, issued under the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Weather Radio Transmitter Grant Program, will fund a 300-watt dual radio transmitter, antenna and building to help broadcast official Weather Service warnings, watches, forecasts and other hazard information.  USDA’s Rural Utilities Service Weather Radio Transmitter Grant Program provides funds to finance the installation of new transmitters to extend the coverage of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Weather Radio system (NOAA Weather Radio) in rural America.
