Grand Lake Chamber still seeking Uber drivers

Summer is just around the corner in Grand County.

The high country teems with events and activities throughout the warmer months from music festivals to fishing tournaments. While there is no shortage of stuff to do or ways to entertain; getting to and from your destination, especially if you have imbibed any alcoholic beverages, can be difficult to impossible depending on where you are in the county.

In January the Grand Lake Chamber of Commerce made initial contacts with the Uber corporation in hopes of bringing its service to the county. No drivers have signed up for the service yet and the Chamber is still seeking anyone interested in becoming an Uber driver.

Uber is an app-based taxi service where customers book rides using the downloadable Uber app available on smartphones. All payment for the service is handled electronically with customer credit cards being billed directly.

The Grand Lake Chamber has promised to promote any drivers who sign up with the service and intends to create and maintain a Facebook page dedicated to Grand County Uber drivers. The Facebook page would list driver schedules.

Executive Director of the Grand Lake Chamber of Commerce Samantha Miller said three people have contacted the Chamber who were interested in signing up as drivers with the service but no one has officially signed up yet. The Chamber hopes to have the service up and running in time for the summer tourist influx.

“Once anyone signs up the Grand Lake Chamber of Commerce will promote them. We just need someone to sign up so the program can go live,” said Miller.

Miller also pointed out that drivers who sign up with the service can operate outside of Grand County, in numerous locations throughout the state including the Denver area. Anyone in Grand County can sign up as a driver.

Drivers must pass a criminal and driving background check as well as a basic physical with a local doctor. They must also posses a valid driver’s license and insurance. Uber has various requirements for driver vehicles as well.

Drivers work as contractors for Uber. You can sign up as a driver by going to https://partners.uber.com/signup/denver/.

If you have questions about signing up as an Uber driver, how the service works, or want more specifics about what being an Uber contract driver entails you can email questions to samantha@grandlakechamber.com.
