Grand Lake woman sentenced to 16 years in death of 3-year-old

An emotionally charged sentencing hearing ended Friday, May 1, with District Court Judge Mary Hoak sentencing Michele Baber, 31, of Grand Lake to 16 years in jail.
After an initial plea of not guilty by reason of insanity, Baber pleaded guilty to child abuse resulting in death ” negligence, a Class 3 felony, in the death of 3-year-old Daisai Derzon, a foster child who was in Baber’s care when she died as the result of head injuries in January 2008.
Baber faced penalties ranging from probation to 16 years in the Department of Corrections.
Hoak gave Baber the maximum sentence after hearing more than two hours of sometimes intense argument and testimony.
