Jean Miller – Rollins Pass should be referred to by its proper name
April 2, 2010
To the Editor:
Referring to the recent letter asking that “Corona Pass” be called by the proper name “Rollins Pass,” and to the Editor’s note saying that the paper will continue referring to “Corona Pass,” I would like to suggest, in the name of accuracy, that the paper call this pass “Rollins Pass (Corona).”
I assume that the Sky-Hi Daily News is interested in educating the public as well as bringing current news to said public. Knowledge of the history of the county is minimal to much of the current population, so many of whom are newcomers, or relatively so. By using the term “Rollins Pass (Corona),” you would identify that popular destination as well as be accurate. Thank you.
Editor’s note: To reiterate, while we understand that USGS maps and others have “officially” named the pass Rollins, we prefer to honor the local tradition that those on this side of the Continental Divide call the pass Corona, certainly a more poetic moniker and less confusing to those who know it only by that name. Readers who feel strongly one way or the other are welcome to vote in our web poll at skyhidailynews.com. Perhaps we’ll change our minds.
