Katie Gibson takes reins at Grand Futures Coalition
September 26, 2012
Following one’s passion is something that it seems only a lucky few get to do in their day-to-day job. Katie Gibson is one them.
Hailing originally from Dumas, Texas, Gibson arrived in Colorado in July 2009 and took up residence in Winter Park nearly a year later in May 2010. She worked at the resort while studying for a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Colorado in Denver. Like so many before her, she succumbed to the charms of the area, and made the decision to stay.
“When I finished I was really passionate about staying in Grand County because I love it here, and I think that we have a lot of really good community members and potential for nonprofit organizations,” Gibson said.
Gibson is the newest member of the Grand Futures Prevention Coalition, a foundation dedicated to building awareness of substance abuse, and providing education to the community, particularly its youth.
Previously, Gibson was working with Advocates for a Violence-Free Community in Hot Sulphur Springs, another nonprofit organization, this one aimed at ending domestic violence in Grand County. From there she heard about the opening in the Grand Futures Prevention Coalition and decided to apply.
“The job opportunity with Grand Futures coincided with what I was really passionate about doing, so it’s a really lucky, awesome opportunity,” said Gibson. “I’m really fortunate that I got the position.”

Gibson is now the Grand County Director, and she plans to do what she can to increase awareness in the community.
“A big goal of mine is to get the Grand Futures name out there now,” she said. “I really want the organization to grow.”
Although she only started the job last Monday, Gibson is already making plans to work with the recreation center in Fraser Valley to put together youth programming.
“It’s been a crazy first week,” she said, “but crazy in a good way. Coming into a small organization with a lot of responsibility is kinda scary, but having a great community makes the process smoother.”
During her off time, Gibson enjoys skiing, hiking, running, and hanging out with her dog.
