To the Editor:

Amidst the horror in Newtown, Conn., and the recent tragedies in Aurora, Portland, and other places there have been many discussions as to why.

Many well-intentioned people are calling for the enactment of more laws, better recognition of psychiatric problems, or the banning of certain firearms and video games to solve the problem. This dialogue has not only occurred here in the U.S. but also in Germany, Finland, China, Italy, and England where other similar tragedies have happened recently.

What has gone virtually unnoticed is that in the last 30 years we have devalued life by fostering a culture that says children in the womb are no longer valuable. Their life is expendable at our whim. Don’t want “it” for whatever reason? Just go to the doctor with his trusty vacuum or take a pill.

We choose who lives and who dies. So why are we shocked when 20-something’s who have now seen their entire life that not all life is valuable are themselves choosing who lives and who dies in a theater, mall, or school?
