Letter: Fraser budget hearings are under way
December 3, 2013
To the Editor,
If Fraser residents and property owners are concerned about their taxes and water rates, they may want to attend the Town of Fraser board meeting today, Wednesday, Dec. 4, starting at 5 p.m.
A November Sky Hi News article noted the Town of Fraser might need to increase water rates by $100 a quarter, or $400 a year, according to the town. More recently, the town staff provided alternative budget proposals including no change in water rates and an 8 percent increase of $20 a quarter, or $80 for the year. It's likely the property-tax increases will be back on the ballot in April.
Should our rates and taxes increase, and if so, by how much? What would the additional revenues pay for? Are these expenditures really necessary? Has the town staff and board considered other ways to meet these needs? What grants and low-interest loans are available?
Budget details can be boring and tedious, but our opinions matter. If you would like to ask questions, listen to the town staff's answers to other questions, or hear the town board's comments, please attend the budget "workshop," which starts at 5 p.m. If you would just like to make a comment or hear other comments, the formal public hearings start shortly after the 7 p.m. board meeting. Budget information is available on the town website.
