Letter: Obamacare falls short in making insurance cheaper
October 11, 2013
To the Editor:
We are residents of Grand County and are in our early 60s. After the Colorado Obamacare exchange ("Connect for Health") opened, we went online to browse potential insurance options under Obamacare. Currently (i.e. prior to Obamacare), we pay $643 per month for the two of us for an HSA policy with a $10,000 family deductible.
Well, we were surprised to find that the cheapest policy available to us would cost $1,300 per month for an HSA plan with a $12,000 annual deductible, more than twice what our current policy costs and with a higher deductible. The most expensive plan under Obamacare is $3,100 per month.
It seems to us that the people most affected by Obamacare are those of us who purchase our own health insurance, and unfortunately in a negative fashion.
There was a marketplace prior to the advent of Obamacare and so we shopped and chose a plan to our liking, a plan that we hope to keep rather than switch to one of the Obamacare plans.
No thanks to the Democrat-controlled government for creating this new "marketplace".
