Grand County, CO Colorado

The Grand County Library District (GCLD) has been awarded a $6500 grant by the Statewide Internet Portal Authority (SIPA). GCLD will be using the funds to digitize historic Grand County newspaper archives, making it available and accessible for free, online on the History Colorado website at and through a link on the GCLD website at

For those who treasure Grand County’s past, are conducting research or looking into family history, the easy online access will be an invaluable tool.

When they are uploaded, the Grand County archives will join the History Colorado website collection of 600,000 digitized pages of Colorado newspapers from 1859 to 1963. Compared to the laborious process of searching on the microfiche machine, the digitized content is easy to use. The newspapers can be searched by text, title or date range and then printed, downloaded or e-mailed. History Colorado report their website is growing in popularity with an annual usage of 94,192 visits, of which 12% of visitors to the site spend more than an hour searching and browsing its contents.

The SIPA grant will cover uploading the Middle Park Times of Kremmling from 1908 – 1917 to the History Colorado website. Although it is a great start, these years represent a small portion of the rich heritage of Grand County Library District’s microfiche newspaper collection. Existing records date from the Grand Lake Prospector of 1883 and include copies of newspapers from the entire County to the present day. It is hoped the SIPA funds will be the start of an effort to make more years of Grand County’s historic newspapers accessible online.

History Colorado estimates it may take up to six months to complete the work of uploading the 1908-1917 Middle Park Times. The existing microfiche newspaper records will remain available at the Granby Library.
