Missing snowmobilers found safe near Grand Lake
March 1, 2009
Two Front Range snowmobilers who became the focus of a search effort Friday night were found Saturday after they spent the night in a makeshift shelter, according to Grand County Sheriff Rod Johnson.
Mikel Mewbourn, 38, of Aurora, and Terry Collins, 48, of Lakewood, left the Idle Glenn parking lot near Grand Lake on Friday morning on a day trip. When they failed to return, the wife of one of the men reported them missing.
Grand County Search and Rescue looked for the men for several hours along the Grand Lake Trail System, but suspended the search until Saturday morning after it became dark.
At about noon on Saturday, searchers found the men walking out on the trail near Whiskey Park.
The men told rescuers their machines had become mired in deep snow. Unable to free their snowmobiles, the men built a shelter and spent the night with their machines.
Neither of them required medical attention, according to Johnson.
