Mountain biker from Washington dies in Telluride crash

TELLURIDE, Colorado (AP) – Authorities say a man from Washington state died after crashing on a mountain bike in southwestern Colorado.

Fifty-one-year-old Rittner “Ritt” Lewis of Everson, Wash., died Saturday on a trail in Telluride.

San Miguel County coroner Bob Dempsey said Monday that Lewis lost control on a steep downhill trail, flipped his bike and landed on his head.

Dempsey says Lewis was wearing a helmet but it wasn’t enough to protect him from the impact.

Dempsey says the cause of death was severe head trauma.

He says Lewis was a widower with three children.
