Betty Drake, 83, a long-time Grand County resident and well-known water color artist, passed away in Westminster, Colo. on April 7. Betty was raised in Blackwell, Okla., graduated from Phillips University with a degree in art, and married Don Drake in March of 1951. The Drake family moved to Grand Lake in 1956 where Betty taught school and in 1962 the family moved to Winter Park (Hideaway Park). Betty was a gifted artist in several mediums but is best known for her water color paintings for which she received national acclaim. She was an avid reader, enjoyed golf with ladies groups at the Grand Lake and Pole Creek Golf Clubs, and skied with her family at Winter Park. Betty is survived by her husband Don of 62 years, her brother JC Estes from Blackwell, Okla., and her children and grandchildren Ron and Susan Drake from Arroyo Grande, Calif. and their sons JB and Lee; Lynn and Wim Huizing from Arvada, Colo. and their daughters Anjolie, Brittany and Kerri; Kirk and Shelley Drake from Chicago, Ill.; and Jenny and Greg Harris from Fraser, Colo. and their daughters Rochelle and Stacy. Betty is also survived by four great-grandchildren. Betty’s loving family is blessed with her legacy of wonderful paintings and will miss her vibrancy, warm smile, sense of humor, and the family home she created for all to visit. The greatest gift she gave was her love of family which will never die.
