Robert Gorman, 1942 – 2014
April 1, 2014
Robert Emmet Gorman, aka "Uncle Bob," unexpectedly died March 23, 2014, at age 72.
Bob, a man of many hats, grew up in Chicago, graduating from De La Salle High School and the Illinois Institute of Technology. At 18, he joined the Army and shipped out to Fort Bliss, El Paso, Texas, serving as a weapons engineer. After the Army, Bob worked for Rock Island Railroad, followed by private contracting with Crane Naval Surface Warfare Centeras, a weapons inspector.
In 1990, Bob moved to Grand County and found a variety of interests, working for SilverCreek Ski Resort, McPherson Drilling, Rocky Mountain National Park, and the Grand Lake Golf Course, Grand Lake Elementary School and Juniper Library. Instantly falling in love with the cathedral peaks, diverse wildlife, breathtaking valleys, and of course, the great people, Bob found Grand County to be home. He loved trains, rockets, flying, skiing, black and white movies, and anything Chicago. On a given day you could find him at the airport conversing with members of the Experimental Aircraft Association or teaching Young Eagles the joy of avionics, cruising Grand Lake, surveying the scene, or behind his binoculars watching shuttles, satellites, and space stations.
Bob was always behind the lens capturing life. Curiosity kept him young, a fire that can never be extinguished. A great man, he aged slowly and had generosity and compassion that's rare. His history is still here, with energy long for decades and beyond. Bob, a giver, never a taker, always helping those in need, was greatly loved by all who knew him. He will be missed. Bob is survived by his nephew Jim, great nephew Conner, and great niece Ashley. A service and honor guard will be held at 12:30 p.m., June 7, 2014, at Point Park in Grand Lake. http://www.grandcountymortuary.com
