Obituary: Edith Malloy Burke
May 12, 2008
Edie, daughter of Laura and Tom Burke and sister of Jack and Liza, passed away during her sleep early Friday morning, May 2, at home in Asheville, N.C. She was a courageous, charming girl born with Hurler’s Syndrome/MPS 1.
Although her years were short, her blessings were many. Tom and Laura married in 1995 in Winter Park and left the Fraser Valley after a decade of fun. Among the many memories of Edie are her gracious acceptance of life’s limitations, her delight in the sounds of genuine laughter, her devotion to Barney and many TV friends, her ability to captivate us with her sensitive eyes, and countless moments of joy marked by her endless toothy smile and hearty laugh. We remember the sweet peaceful feeling of holding her in our arms so near our heart.
In addition to her parents and brother and sister, Edie is survived by maternal grandparents: Kitty Sprinkle McKeithen of Asheville, N.C., Loy and Susan McKeithen of Charlotte, N.C.; paternal grandparents: Martha and Denny Burke of Rapid City, S.D., and aunts and uncles, great aunts and uncles, and numerous first cousins.
She will be missed by her caring and supportive neighborhood and school families as well as friends and relatives in Asheville and beyond. A celebration will be held May 18 in Asheville, N.C. at Grace Covenant Church at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes any memorials go to the National MPS Society, 4220 NC Hwy 55, Ste. 140, Durham, NC 27713 or http://www.mpssociety.org.
