We said goodbye to daylight savings time this week. I’m not liking that darkness creeping up at 5 p.m., but it’s good to have that extra daylight in the morning. Last week we got a taste of what the upcoming weather will be like when Old Man Winter blew in for a few days. Don’t be caught unprepared . . . it’s time to winterize.1. Put away the hummingbird feeder and get out the snow shovel2. Clean up the trash before it gets buried in snow3. Change the oil and make sure there’s window washing solution in your car4. Shake the dust off your winter coat and find those warm gloves5. Scatter those poppy seeds and they’ll grow up pretty next spring6. Stack the deck furniture under the deck7. Split and stack your firewood for the season8. Purchase long underwear9. Pack summer clothes in suitcase for vacation10. Make a big pot of chili and freeze the leftovers for the next snowy dayThe Grand Lake Chamber Visitor’s Center has shifted into off-season hours until late May. Those hours are: Monday – 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., Tuesday – Wednesday – Closed, Thursday – Saturday: 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., Sunday: 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.During the holidays, the Visitor’s Center will be open seven days a week with the limited hours on Christmas Eve Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.Auditions for the 2009 Holiday Melodrama will be held on Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 4 & 5 from 6:30-8:00 p.m. There are 12 characters – four male and eight female. There are no children’s parts as such, though two of the female parts could be younger females (teenagers). Bring your lunch and join in the discussion.November is vacation month for many of our local restaurants. Here is an up-to-the-minute schedule of what I know so far. The Backstreet Steakhouse is closed and will re-open at 4:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 27 with a new menu and continuation of “All You Can Eat Shrimp” on Fridays. The Gateway Inn Hotel is closed through Nov. 30. The lounge will only be open on Thursdays and every Bronco Game Day in November. There will be a Thanksgiving Day Potluck during the Bronco game. Caroline’s Cuisine is now closed and will reopen the week of Thanksgiving on Wednesday. They will be open on Thanksgiving day from noon to 5 p.m. with a special menu, and are now taking reservations for holiday parties. The Grand Lake Brewing Company is open every day from Noon – 8 p.m. for lunch, dinner and beer.
