Cathy Walton-Smith – Don’t mind those showers, it’s a ‘dry’ rain

Cathy Walton-Smith / View from the LakeGrand Lake, Colorado

Weather is such an unpredictable factor in everything we do in the mountains. When you live here long enough, it becomes obvious that the term “summer” is used in only the broadest sense of the word. Only a fool leaves home in the morning without a pair of warm socks and a jacket in the car for later.Lately, it seems smart to expect at least one or six rain showers between bursts of sunshine every day. But the strange part is that we almost never get wet (yes, it’s a “dry” rain), and nobody bothers to carry an umbrella. Just wait a few minutes and the cloud burst will move on.Join the Grand Arts Council, Sky-Hi Daily News and the Grand Lake Chamber for the FREE Music in the Park Concert Series this Thursday at 6 p.m. This week we are pleased to present one of Grand County’s favorites: Mickey Sandora & Trish Leone. Bring an umbrella, it will probably rain.Wednesday, July 8, be at the Juniper Library at 6:30 p.m. for “WWII Vets Honor Flight – a Portrait of Freedom” presented by local Rotarian Avis Gray. Avis will offer an oral and photographic account of the historic journey this past April, during which four World War II veterans with roots in Grand County traveled to Washington, D.C., to visit war memorials and reflect on their experiences. The program, featuring Chuck Illsley, Joe Recktenwald, Mac Ruske and Bob Seaton is free.Harvey’s Tavern at the Circle H Lodge is now open daily. Print out the parade registration form at http://www.grandlakechamber.com, and return it to the Chamber Visitor Center no later than Thursday, July 16. This ad is in addition to a Grand Lake retail ad that has been running on Channel 17 for the past year – both of which increase awareness about Grand Lake and its many amenities to Grand County guests, second-home owners and residents. Good job. This has been a tough week for the General and I with the passing of our good friend Johnny B. Nelson. The gunfights and holdups played out during Western Weekend will never be the same. John was one of Grand Lake’s most recognized characters, loved by us all. I never wrote much about him because he hated to see his name in the newspaper. The next time you step into one of our local taverns, buy a bourbon and coke for Johnny. Everyone who knew him will take a drink of it in his honor. Many of us remember former resident Kevin Campbell. Right now he is preparing for his third round of chemotherapy and fighting cancer at one of Denver’s acute care centers. Send him your get well wishes and notes at 6840 Estes Dr,. Arvada, CO 80002 or call him at (720) 894-6057.Arts on Park Ave. is conducting a couple of Plein Air Workshops July 12-17 and August 2-7. Learn landscape painting with Colorado artist, Marston A. Jaquis at sites throughout Grand County. For more information call Karen Noberg at 941-623-3720 or register on line at colorado-artclasses.com.
