Kremmling " It’s too late now: You’re either naughty or nice

We have reached that time of year when it is inevitable and there is not a single thing anyone can do to change it: You are either on Santa’s nice or naughty list and that is where you will stay for this year.

If you are on the naughty list you may as well resign yourself to enjoying watching other people on the multitude of Christmas television specials get what they wanted despite all the circumstances seeming to be against them. You will have no such luck. At the very least, contribute your lump of coal to the fireplace to help keep everyone warm.

If you made the nice list there is no guarantee that your every wish will be fulfilled, but you are sure to enjoy the holidays at the very least.

Regardless of which list I fall on, I do enjoy the holiday television specials. My favorite of this year is the new Muppets Christmas special. The other holiday item I look forward to is a good fruitcake. Go back and re-read that last sentence if you don’t believe me ” I like a good fruitcake. I don’t find fruit in my cake any more bizarre than nuts in cookies or brownies. I think more people like fruit cake in private than will admit it ” why else would there be so many made every season? Where would we put all the fruitcakes people claim they don’t like each year? I hate to think the same old batch has been recycled the past 20 years.

One of the other traditions of the Christmas holiday I really enjoy are the lights. My family was honored to be able to help judge the lights in Kremmling for the Decorate Downtown program put on by the Chamber of Commerce this year. All the lighting displays were enjoyable to look at but since we had to choose three winners, EZ Insurance Solutions came in first place, West End Liquor took second place, and the Fishin’ Hole came in a close third. I just could not ignore that snow globe. Hopefully this can be an annual event that even more of the businesses will participate in next year.

The display I look forward to every year is at the ranch off Highway 9 as you drive out of Kremmling toward Summit County. The brilliant electric blue of the front gate announces its presence, but the field of decorated Christmas trees that fills the darkness toward the slopes at the back of the ranch are worth the wait every year.

Is it even necessary for mountain communities to wish for a white Christmas? I seem to take that aspect for granted every year but I certainly take time to gaze at the soft white highlights the snow brings to our mountains this time of year. Unless it’s a blizzard and I can’t see my own hands. Living in this area tends to make our homes an anticipated journey for out of state relatives to visit over the holidays. My wife’s parents are coming out from Kansas to visit this year, but they won’t arrive until just after Christmas day.

If you are hanging around town this year, after Christmas the Kremmling Library will have a free showing of Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls on Dec. 30. The showing starts at 6 p.m. and would be a fun event for your visiting guests. Otherwise have a Merry Christmas wherever you travel this year.
