Kremmling winters sound worse than they are to those from afar

Larry Ebersole / Kremmling Crossroads

My parents are on their way to spend a couple of weeks in Kremmling and their first question was the old standby, “Do you have any snow yet?”

As much time as they have spent in Colorado, this is their first fall trip, so it is not like they are asking me about snow in July. There is the snow that suddenly showed up above tree line a couple of days ago, but overall it is an absolutely beautiful September so far.

As I am writing, I am sitting outside in the afternoon sun watching the dogs chase all the jumping and low flying bugs they can eat. The secret that I think it is time to share with my parents is that I will welcome a Rocky Mountain winter every time over the winters I grew up through in Minnesota and Kansas. Many of my relatives just assume it must be miserable to live through the winter in the Rockies. Certainly we have our days when it is downright miserable and all you can do is stay in, but then the sun comes back out. I remember the Kansas ice storms and the non-stop wind blowing over the ice and am thankful for living here. I guess I am getting a little ahead of myself as it is technically still summer, but they asked.

Our local 4-H club will be hosting its Fall Craft Show and Bazaar on Oct. 4 at the CSU Extension Building at the fairgrounds in Kremmling. If you would like information about selling your goods or just want to shop at the bazaar contact Shawn at (970) 724-0707.

Patty Alander would like to extend an invitation to artists from the Kremmling area. Whether your artistic expression is an everyday obsession or a weekend hobby you are invited to a local artist gathering at Maverick’s in Granby starting at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 26. The group would like to have monthly meetings at venues throughout the county if there is enough interest.

Our local Chamber of Commerce has an ’80s night planned for Sept. 27 from 8 until midnight at the Rocky Mountain Bar and Grill. I admit to watching and enjoying more than my share of the ’80s video marathon on VH1 over memorial weekend. On the 28th is the 3rd Annual Mulberry Extreme Motorcycle Climb. Contact the Kremmling Chamber with questions on either event.
