The groundhog will have already checked his shadow by the time this column runs, but I won’t have known the result by my deadline. I’ll have to base my uneducated guess on the black clouds I see on the horizon as a sign of much more winter for the Kremmling area.

A good freeze would be most welcome as we head toward the Wolford Mountain Ice Fishing contest on Feb. 14. Coincidence or not, it seems like there is a new story of people or dogs falling through the ice on the nightly news. I realize that it happens on the Front Range most of the time, but a little extra reinforcement on Wolford couldn’t hurt.

I am not sure if mountain living attracts strong people or if living in this environment makes people a little heartier, but I bet it is a little of both. I bring this up as I met a spry young lady in the Mercantile last week who claimed to be in her 80s who finally bought her first ice fishing hut so she didn’t have to sit out in the open any more. I forgot to ask if she still drilled the hole by hand or had gone electric. I am sure she will be one on many at the contest with years of experience.

I haven’t done a lot of ice fishing but it can’t be as simple as dropping a line through a hole in the ice and just waiting, or is it? It has got to be easier than driving around on the ice we have had this year. My luck has been bad enough this year and seeing plow trucks get stuck in my neighborhood hasn’t helped any.

Our ability to get around has been greatly enhanced by modern technology like four-wheel drive. It is surely a testament to the human will that the early pioneers were able to explore and open up the Rockies while maneuvering wagons through here.

The other big event headed this way is the Harlem Ambassador’s basketball team that will be playing at West Grand High School on March 10.
