Letter: Accident wake-up call for Grand Lake’s Fourth of July traffic problem
July 11, 2013
To the Editor:
My family and I have attended the Grand Lake fireworks display for the last 30 years. It is a great event and a spectacular display. However, we are always amazed that the town of Grand Lake, in cooperation with the county sheriff and the State Patrol, has never been able to come up with a plan to efficiently clear the traffic from the town.
I have waited in traffic jams at Red Rocks, where there are far more cars to move from the area and only two exits, but the whole place is cleared out in under an hour.
In Grand Lake, we have waited for hours to make it out of town, finally resorting to parking a car on highway 34 and walking in and out. Unfortunately this year we watched with friends and had a car on the North Portal road. We were trapped for hours with no communication for the delay and did not make it out of Grand Lake until about 3 a.m.
While the accident on the Fourth of July was tragic, it was also preventable. I hope this will serve as a wake-up call to come up with an efficient, practical plan to clear the traffic from the town in an organized manner.
