Letter: Miller, effective action, leadership and cooperation needed

County Commissioners

Action and inaction by the Board of County Commissioners last Tuesday combined to cost precious dollars as the county continues to wrestle with deficit spending. County Treasurer Christina Whitmer told the Board she will not be making any investments with county funds until the Board clarifies its recent short-circuiting of her normal practices of earning taxpayers approximately (using her figures) $33,000 per month by investing tax revenue moving through county accounts. Return on investments is the measure of a good County Treasurer; if returns are poor then it would be time for voters to replace the elected occupant of this office. Taxpayers should hope the Board will work quickly to allow the Treasurer to re-start this revenue stream.

In addition, the search for a new County Manager was short-circuited by Commissioner Jane Tollett who said the level of dysfunction in the courthouse does not foster the selection of a new chief. Dysfunction cries out for effective leadership. The search was called off pending further negotiations.

Effective action, leadership and cooperation constitute the only path to be followed toward more effective county governance.
