Look to our Web site for convention coverage

Autumn Phillips / From the Editor

Maybe you’re sick of it, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t matter any more.

As the election season continues ” so does the election coverage.

Our letters to the editor section fills with commentary about national issues ” as seen from the right and the left.

Our syndicated editorial cartoons make fun of one candidate, then the other.

And now ” at the height of it all ” thousands upon thousands of people are heading our way to the Democratic National Convention in Denver.

Even though the convention is only and hour and a half away, we decided not to apply for media credentials.

I could not imagine sending one of my reporters into that mess. Of those thousands of people gathered at the convention, a good majority of them will be members of the media ” scrambling to find a unique angle.

The homeless on the 16th Street Mall will get their 15 minutes of fame. The protesters will be interviewed. The bartenders, the hotel clerks, the teen bloggers will all be the focus of “color” stories ” that’s what we call feature stories that add dimension to the hard news pieces.

All those stories will pour our way via the Associated Press wire and through shared story partnerships we have set up with the Rocky Mountain News, the Steamboat Springs newspaper and the newspapers in our company ” our sister papers, the Greeley Tribune and the Aspen Times, are sending reporters and photographers.

What we have to decide at this newspaper is, “What do our readers want to know?” and “What can we provide our readers that no one else can?”

Next week, as the Democratic National Convention becomes the focus of news across the country, we will keep our local focus ” unless you read this and want us to do something else.

We will dedicate one page every day to the DNC in the newspaper.

Otherwise, we will let our Web site act as a conglomerate for all the information coming through from the Associated Press and all the other newspapers. I will build a button on our homepage that you can click any time of the day and find something new. Beginning on Monday, visit http://www.skyhidailynews.com for up to the minute coverage of the Democratic National Convention.
