‘Outdoor Adventures’ blog launches today on our Web site

Autumn Phillips " From the Editor

When you’re new to Grand County, like I am, you spend hours poring over maps, trying to situate yourself.

Your eyes blur after a while, looking over 1,847 square miles of outdoor opportunity.

I bought a good guidebook of hiking trails on my first weekend in town and have used it to get alternately exhilarated and lost in several corners of the county.

They say there are 600 miles of mountain biking trails in the summer and, it seems, an almost inexhaustible supply of backcountry skiing in the winter.

But, unless you know where to go, it is also a patchwork of developments and barbwire fences.

That’s why I was so excited to hear from Granby resident Kristen Lodge this week, asking me if I would be interested in hosting a blog about the outdoors in Grand County.

We sat down and quickly hashed out the details of an online project that I think any outdoor enthusiast will appreciate.

We’re calling it “Outdoor Adventures by Kristen Lodge.” The blog launched yesterday.

She’ll post a couple times a week about the outdoors lifestyle of Grand County.

Whenever she has a new post, it will appear at the top of the Web site ” http://www.skyhidailynews.com. If you go to the site and don’t see her blog immediately, just type in “blog” in the search field and it will come right up.

Kristen moved to Grand County from my old stomping grounds in Steamboat Springs.

She started exploring the White Mountains of New Hampshire in 1988. She has hiked 47 of 49 4,000-footers and has backpacked throughout northern New England including parts of the Appalachian Trail and the Long Trail. She has skied in Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana and Oregon, and has competed twice in winter pentathlons.

In addition to exploring the trails in Grand County with her dogs, Abbey and Daisy, her favorite activities include reading literary fiction, writing creative nonfiction and browsing social networking sites on the Internet.

Prior to living in Grand County, she lived in Steamboat Springs and explored the mountains and canyons of Routt County. As an avid triathlete, she volunteered with community organizations including the Steamboat Springs Running Series and the Steamboat Triathlon Club.

Eventually, the Outdoor Adventures blog will be interactive, with the ability to post your own comments about trail closures or questions about places to fish or ride.

Unfortunately, the comment posting function of our Web site is still “under construction.” But, if you read something you would like to comment about, e-mail me and I’ll post your comment.

As always, it’s a work in progress, but one that is definitely progressing.

For this blog to happen, all Kristen had to do was stop by my office. If you have an idea or would like to be a part of the content of this newspaper or our Web site in some way that benefits the community, I’m interested. I can be reached by e-mail at aphillips@grandcountynews.com, by phone at (970) 887-3334 ext. 19600 or stop by the office at 424 E. Agate Ave. in Granby.
