The Benefits of Small Group Training

Our fitness business caters to personal training, semi-private and small group training. And, due to this business model, we have discovered a plethora of benefits to all three; however, this week we will highlight the benefits of small group training and next week we will feature the specific benefits of semi-private and personal training.
First, let’s identify the difference between personal training, semi-private and small group training. Personal training usually implies one-to-one sessions (i.e. you and your personal trainer work alone).
Semi-private sessions, which in my experience are often with couples or two/three friends that have similar fitness goals/objectives, are designed for those clients who wish to work with a trainer and receive more attention than in a larger group, would like to reduce the cost of working one-on-one, or just want to work out together.
The American Council on Exercise (ACE) recommends that small group training is limited to 4-10 clients, in some cases perhaps 6-12 clients. The key is that the small group is small enough so that the trainer may safely and effectively address their needs as a group and, to the extent feasible, as individuals within the small group. Described below are a few of the benefits to small group training and if your facility does not currently offer a small group training programming option, suggest they do-it is a win-win. As always, prior to beginning any exercise program, please consult your physician.
Small Group Training Benefits
• In a well-designed small group training program, many of the same procedures take place prior to the program beginning that are expected in semi-private and personal training programs. For example, we would anticipate that each of the participants would complete a health history questionnaire and waiver of liability, consult with the trainer to determine if their goals and objectives will align with those offered by the program, and have a thorough fitness assessment performed by the trainer to establish a fitness baseline from which to assess progress, and to determine the participant’s limitations so that appropriate modifications may be made throughout the program to address those limitations.

• Small group training fees may be significantly less than semi-private or personal training program fees as the total program cost is shared equally among the participants.
• Your slot in the program is protected as you pay your fees up front – a wonderful stress reduction benefit.
• Orientation to the program: We would also assume that the trainer would meet with the small group to discuss the program format and all details relevant to this program. This is a huge benefit to small group training programs, and is an excellent way to ensure everyone is on the same page and for all participants to meet one another creating a team environment.
• There is usually a specific program beginning and ending in small group training programs. For example, we would anticipate that most small group training programs would limit the program duration to 4-10 weeks. It will depend upon that program’s specific goals.
• Results Oriented: Small group training programs usually have a specific end-result that the program strives to achieve for each of the participants within the allotted time frame.
