When smaller is better: More personal extended care for your loved ones

Eric Murray / Voice of Your HospitalKremmling, Colorado

When you choose extended care for a loved one, quality health care and compassion are your top priorities. You want doctors and nurses to keep a keen eye on their health. You also want them to benefit from regular hygiene maintenance. In addition, you realize that in order to be as happy as possible, they need to enjoy nutritious food, engage in stimulating activities and share loving conversations. With a capacity for only six extended care residents, Kremmling Memorial Hospital believes residents benefit from being a part of a smaller hospital. Were a small hospital with a big heart, says social worker, Dawn Mathews. Mathews believes that residents in Kremmling receive a higher quality of care because of the ability of staff to dedicate more time and attention. She says that it often takes a while to get to patients in bigger facilities. When this is the case, things like regular bathing and regular bathroom breaks are sometimes delayed. Of even more concern, she notes, is that sometimes newly developed medical conditions such as infections arise and arent caught as quickly as they might be if there were a higher care taker-to-patient ratio the distinct advantage for residents at Kremmling Memorial Hospital. I decided to move my mother from a large Denver nursing home to Kremmling Memorial Hospital, says local resident Jim Cartwright. He believes his mother was treated as though she were simply a part of a numbers game in the bigger facility. My mother is happy here, said Cartwright. I think her doctor is as good as they come. His mother recently wrote a thank you letter to the nursing staff, I am very happy here. It is great. It is remarkable. Thank you. For many residents, continuing to live in the mountains is important. Extended care service in Grand County is found only at Kremmling Memorial Hospital, which explains the common waiting list. Other options in this region are Doak Walker Care Center in Steamboat, The Life Care Center of Evergreen, and Sandrock Ridge Care & Rehab in Craig.
