Police arrest suspect in Winter Park sexual assault

Police have arrested a 27-year-old Granby man who is suspected of committing a sexual assault in a Winter Park restaurant on the evening of March 1, according to a Fraser-Winter Park Police Department statement.

The statement says the Granby Police Department is also investigating the man as a suspect in another sexual assault case.

The Winter Park case began when a 16-year-old girl reported that a man had assaulted her in the woman’s room of the restaurant and then fled the scene. After an investigation by Fraser-Winter Park Det. Amy Zacek Smith, an arrest warrant was issued for the Granby man on Wednesday, April 8.

Officers from the Fraser-Winter Park Police Department, Granby Police Department, and the Grand County Sheriff’s Office arrested the suspect following a traffic stop in the Granby area later on Wednesday, according to the police statement.

The suspect was booked into the Grand County Jail on a charge of sexual assault, a class 3 felony, and was being held there without bond as of Thursday afternoon, according to police.

Granby Police Chief Bill Housley said the other sexual assault the suspect is being investigated for is a case that has been ongoing in Granby during the past three months.
