Quiet zone in Winter Park nearing completion
May 22, 2012
Union Pacific Railroad workers arrived on Monday to complete the final segment of the quiet zone at Vasquez Road in Winter Park. They are installing new gates and electronics for the constant warning device. Once construction is finished, trains will no longer have to blow their whistles as they approach the intersection.
Originally scheduled for last fall, due to weather and temperatures, the construction was delayed by Union Pacific, according to Mark Davis, spokesperson for Union Pacific. Once they complete the construction this week, the quiet zone will be initialized. Winter Park Town Council approved an expenditure of $225,000 to pay for upgraded equipment, gates and medians at the intersection in July 2011.
