Relay For Life of Grand County set for Aug. 8-9
July 16, 2009
One in three people will be diagnosed with cancer during their lifetime and Grand County residents have suffered the loss of far too many friends and family to this devastating disease. As a rural community, our resources have been limited. But organizers of the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life of Grand County hope to get the word out that, together, we can and are doing more for local victims, survivors, and their caregivers. Money raised during the first two years of this event has been used to fund cancer research programs nationwide, and to provide wigs, gas cards, hotel vouchers, and much-needed cancer patient related information to Grand County locals needing assistance. But much more is needed. This year’s Relay for Life will start at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 8, and continue throughout the night until 7 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 9, because “cancer never sleeps.” Past participants claim that it is an unforgettable experience, starting with a “Survivor’s Lap,” continuing with a moving ceremony at dusk when personalized luminarias, to honor and remember friends and family members, are lit around the track, and ending with final thoughts of all that has been and can be done when this disease affects members of our community. There is no cost to attend. This year, live music will be provided by Hendrix, Osborne & Key, followed by the Irish band Claddagh and a night-long lineup of local musicians. Food and drink has been donated by Fontenot’s, Hernando’s, Winter Park Pub, and Smokin’ Moes.Mountain Parks Electric Inc. will be having a barbeque, there will be a movie and fun and games for children. The event will end with a Pancake Breakfast hosted by Granby Rotary as, together, we honor survivors, remember those lost, and help with the ongoing fight against cancer.Great news is that, less than a month from Relay, we already have 21 teams signed up and have raised $5,490.Visit http://www.grandcountyrelay.org for more information.
