Review of Crested Butte resort expansion appeal due in July

CRESTED BUTTE, Colo. (AP) – Crested Butte Mountain Resort says a U.S. Forest Service reviewing officer is examining a ruling blocking the ski area’s expansion proposal.

They say a decision by the officer – who works for Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell – is due by July 14.

Gunnison National Forest Supervisor Charlie Richmond in November ruled that the resort’s plans to develop Snodgrass Mountain weren’t in the public interest. He cited concerns including that the proposal might hurt Canada lynx.

The resort appealed, and a deputy regional forester ruled that Richmond’s decision was within his discretionary authority.

Resort officials then appealed to Tidwell’s office. They contend Richmond’s decision excluded the public from a decision affecting public land.
