Run for Independence was a big hit, thanks to all the help

To the Editor:

What a day.. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts to everyone who made the 2009 Run for Independence such a terrific event, especially some 580 registrants representing 16 states plus Colorado who participated in the 5-mile event on a picture perfect mountain summer’s Saturday.

Whether you volunteered to register people on the morning of the event or to guide people along the route or to hand out cups of water or to prepare watermelon and oranges at the post-race party or to collect numbers as runners crossed the finish line, you were crucial to the success of the run/walk.

Kudos for Tom and Stephanie Carey, who orchestrate the timing of runners, walkers and stroller pushers, including recording the fastest runner at 29 minutes 3 seconds – WOW.

Thanks to Rendezvous, the title sponsor, and to Mountain Timber Furnishings, the Fraser River Valley Lions Club, Beaver Village, Grand Mountain Bank, Amazin’ Mazes, Mountain Parks Electric, Grand County, The Town of Winter Park, The Town of Fraser, and Winter Park Resort for sponsoring the run and the T-shirts we all wore.

Thank you to Karen Vance, who every year has generously donated a piece of her beautiful art to be won by one of the participants, all of whose names have been entered in a drawing for prizes. Thanks, too, to Ski Broker, Christy Sports, Rocky Mountain Roastery, Dog Sled Rides of Winter Park, Amazin’ Mazes, the chamber and The Childrens’ Hospital Foundation for donating drawing prizes.

Of course none of this would transpire without the Winter Park/Fraser Valley Chamber of Commerce and the gals who do the planning, organization, and labor – a round of applause for Catherine, Tamara, Maria, Danielle, Joyce, Christyna, Kristen, Michelle, Sara, MaryAnn and Mary. Photographers Byron Hetzler and John Erwin beautifully photographed this memorable day.

The kids on dialysis or post kidney transplant who get to go to Camp Chief Ouray at the YMCA of the Rockies while having their dialysis or medical needs met at the Vacation Kidney Center thank you, too – summer camp for them is such an independence-granting and fun experience, made possible by each of you.

Many, many heartfelt thanks
