Sky-Hi News staff

A search and rescue operation is ongoing for a hiker authorities believe has gone missing in the Longs Peak area in Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP).

Peter Jeffris, 25, of Broomfield, was reported to have left Sunday morning to climb Longs Peak. He did not arrive at work on Monday morning and his car was located in the Longs Peak Trailhead parking lot.

RMNP Park rangers would like to hear from anyone who was in the Longs Peak area on Sunday, Nov. 16. Call 970-586-1204.

Search and Rescue teams searched portions of the Longs Peak area until dark Monday night. On Tuesday teams began searching the north face, Keyhole Route, Chasm Cirque area and along the Longs Peak Trail.

It is unclear what route Jeffris took up the mountain but he indicated to friends he was considering the Cables Route on the north face. Reports by authorities say he was not prepared for an overnight trip.

Weather on Sunday and Monday included snow, high winds and low temperatures. On Tuesday teams face extremely high winds, blowing snow and gusts up to 85 mph at 14,000 feet. Aerial search efforts are not possible due to extreme winds.
