J. Hank Shell, III, started his position of reporter at the Sky-Hi News on Monday, April 28. The North Carolina-native moved to Colorado after spending nearly a year traveling in South America.
Shell will be covering the police and courts beat in Grand County, as well as education, towns in central and western Grand County and general assignment stories.
Shell attended Appalachian University in Boone, N.C. He began as a biology major before switching to journalism. Shell worked as an intern in Ashville, N.C., at an investigative nonprofit reporting service.
At the end of his junior year, Shell took a job at the investigative office working as a contributing photo and reporting journalist. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication with a focus in journalism and a minor in English. He traveled to South America a month after graduating, traveling through the countries of the Americas, studying in a language school in Ecuador, then moving up to Colombia to work in a youth hostel.
Shell was raised in the mountains of North Carolina, but said he finds the mountains here in Colorado "equally majestic."
"I am excited to get back into storytelling," Shell said of journalism.
