Byers Canyon Shooting Range closes Jan. 8

PARSHALL — Colorado Parks and Wildlife is reminding shooting enthusiasts that the seasonal closure of the Byers Canyon Shooting Range in Hot Sulphur Springs will occur Jan. 8, spurred by the recent snowfall and the recent sub-zero temperatures in the area.

CPW officials in Hot Sulphur Springs close the popular range each year to protect wildlife from human-caused stress during the coldest time of the year.

"We've been closing the range during winter for several years now," said CPW Property Technician Doug Gillham from Hot Sulphur Springs. "It has helped keep big game in their traditional winter range and away from private land, roads, railroads and other potentially fatal conflicts."

The range will remain closed until wintering big game migrates to summer range, usually mid- to late-April.

"We appreciate everyone's cooperation during the short period the range is closed," added Gillham. "We've had good compliance from the public in the past and we expect that will continue."

The Byers Canyon Shooting Range, which is owned and operated by Colorado Parks and Wildlife, is popular with sportsmen from across the Western Slope. It is also heavily used by shooters from the Front Range due to its proximity to Denver.
