Conditions improve ahead of 3 Lakes Ice Fishing Tournament

GRANBY — Conditions are looking good for the 3 Lakes Ice Fishing Tournament.

Thursday morning saw temperatures fall well below zero in Grand County. Brian Werner, Public Information Officer for Northern Water, said he had recently spoken with workers at the Pharr Pump Plant on Lake Granby and that Lake Granby is 5 ½ feet below full right now.

"We are brining water through the Adams Tunnel right now," said Werner. "But it won't change the water levels much by this weekend."

Werner said workmen at the Farr Pump plant said ice is between half a foot and one full foot in thickness depending on the location on the lake.

The 3 Lakes Ice Fishing Tournament begins Friday morning, Jan. 23, and continues through Sunday, Jan. 25. Event organizers are expecting roughly 1,000 attendees for the annual angling competition.

With the relatively moderate temperatures Grand County has experienced over the last few weeks there was some concern about the prevalence of ice on the lakes. Owner of Budget Tackle in Granby, Richard Crager, dismissed such concerns and explained that even if Lake Granby was not covered in ice for the tournament both Shadow Mountain Lake and Grand Lake would be iced over and available for fishing.
