Cross country racers flock to annual Stampede outside Granby

On a beautiful winter morning last Saturday, hundreds of cross-country skiers of all ages skied the trails of Snow Mountain Ranch in the 25th Annual Alpina-Rossignol Snow Mountain Stampede ski marathon.

The Nordic skiers raced 42 kilometers (26 miles) using both the freestyle and classic ski techniques in the Stampede’s main event. Other skiers competed in the 21K half-marathon’s freestyle and classic events. Saturday’s competition also had a 10-kilometer freestyle and Kids 2K races.

Saturday’s Snow Mountain Stampede was the 11th event of this winter’s Colorado Cup Series of cross-country ski races.

42K freestyle results

The overall men’s winner of the 42K freestyle was Benjamin Barbier of Steamboat Springs who skied a time of 2:11:38. The runner-up was Daniel Weinberg of Boulder with 2:15:30 while third place went to Kremmling’s Shawn Scholl with 2:17:59.

In the 42K freestyle competition for women, Sarah Konrad of Laramie won first place with 2:13:48 as well as being the overall second-place finisher in the race. Second place was taken by Natalie Ward of Aspen with 2:30:48 while Mia Gaw of Boulder placed third with 2:32:13.

The overall men’s winner of the 42K classic race was Andy Richmond of Frisco with a time of 2:33:03. Second place went to Jon Miller of Denver with 2:34:22 while Greg Molemaar of Fort Collins placed third in 2:51:12.

The women’s overall winner was Deborah Shulman of Bellvue with 3:37:57. Gina Shively of Laramie was the runner-up with 4:27:38 while third place was taken by Sherry Pitt of Denver in 4:34:33.

The women’s overall 21K freestyle winner was Maria Wik of Louisville with a time of 1:19:31. The runner-up was Sue Griffith of Boulder in 1:20:58 while Marianne Osteen of Steamboat Springs finished third in 1:22:32.

The women’s fastest 21K classic skier was Shana Keilson of Boulder with a time of 1:33:47. Marti Irish of Steamboat Springs took second place with 1:53:00 while Carol Hermes of Boulder finished third in 1:56:56.

The men’s overall winner of the 10K freestyle race was Thomas Fitzgerald of Laramie with 33:39. Alden Lowney of Boulder took second with 34:18 while fellow Boulderite Colin Borchardt placed third in 36:28.

The overall winner of the women’s 10K freestyle was Sarah McDonald of Laramie with 40:59. Another Laramie skier, Amy Puckett, placed second with 44:38 while Kristina Brendzel of Dillon was third in 46:24.
