YMCA Snow Mountain RanchThe YMCA program offers ski instruction for beginners and more accomplished skiers ages 5-15, skiing games, winter nature activities, and ends with a Nordic Ski Festival the last Friday. The program runs from Jan. 6 through Feb. 26 on both Friday and Sunday from 1-2:30 p.m. The Friday program gives more progressive lessons and has hot cocoa afterwards. Equipment and trail pass are provided. Call Christine Lee at YMCA Nordic Center 970-887-2152 extension 4173 for more information and to register. Devil’s Thumb RanchThe Friday Fun Kid’s Cross Country Ski Program at Devil’s Thumb Ranch is Friday’s 10-11:30 a.m. starting Jan. 13 through Mar. 9. Ski, play on skis, have fun with skis. Hot cocoa follows in the Broken Axe Barn. Fee is $20 for the entire 10 weeks ($2 per week) to cover hot chocolate and program fee. Children are accepted between the ages of 3-10 with most of the kids 6-8 years old. Equipment rental, instruction & trail pass provided by Devil’s Thumb Ranch. Meet outside the Broken Axe Barn on the entry to the trail system. Those who need to check out equipment will want to be at the rental counter ∏ hour before the 10am start time. Preregistration is required for the free kids lessons offered Jan. 13, 20, and 27 starting at 10 a.m. Trail pass and equipment are also provided but please be at the Nordic Center ∏ hr prior to lesson start. Call 970-627-8008 for more information.Grand Winter Carnival Remember to sign up at http://www.headwaterstrails.org/events for the Grand Winter Carnival Ski Trek Dec. 30 from the YMCA to Hot Sulphur Springs starting mid-day at the YMCA Nordic Center. A $25 donation is requested benefiting trails in Grand County. Day of registration is $35. This is your only opportunity to ski through the beautiful private lands behind Nine Mile Mountain on a challenging 12.5 mile backcountry trek to start the six-week Winter Carnival Celebration. There will be a sag wagon available at the aid station half way through the trek before the climb over Cottonwood Pass.
